Perspective

Willkommen, Guten Tag and Begrüßung!  Well that is the extent of my German, but there was no limit to the enthusiasm at Synergy/Summit Berlin last month as we explored new market opportunities together.  Tom Flink, our Channel VP told more than a thousand partners in attendance “we expect your business to be migrating to subscription based services over the next several years”.  For partners in attendance at the Cloud and CSP breakout sessions we know that you have already begun to make this happen.  More, in the words of several partners who attended these sessions, “I am going to change my business model after hearing what you’ve had to say”.

Most of the revelation for partners came from what we are saying about Desktop-as-a-Service (DaaS) and using Citrix technology to define the user’s desktop experience.  The reason this was such a revelation is that many partners are battling Microsoft over the licensing for VDI in the Hosted Application market and don’t have to.  Using Shared Hosted Desktops and Windows Server 2008 R2, we were able to demonstrate LIVE what a Desktop Service Delivery model looks like and how to make substantial profits with it.  All within the requirements of the Microsoft SPLA program.

But that’s not all!  Working with Control Panel technology leaders like EMS Cortex, Citrix is redefining hosting services to the masses. SIMPLICITY and PROFITABILITY continue to be the main themes of our program.  Making it simple to deliver a desktop to the end user no matter the device is a unique differentiator.  Profitability comes from the fact that you as a Citrix Service Provider can take advantage of the scale of Hosted Shared Desktops in your data center (up to 5X the scalability of VDI) AND give the customer a High Definition user eXperience (HDX).  In Berlin we heard testimony after testimony from CSPs who are growing their business rapidly with this approach.

Desktops as a Service (DaaS) – Hosted Shared and Hosted Personal Desktops

Delivering Desktops as a Service (DaaS) is one of the most exciting new opportunities for Citrix Service Providers.  The DaaS capabilities within XenDesktop 4 and FlexCast present the broadest array of options for delivering the Windows 7 desktop experience to any device over any network, with an excellent performance and experience. CSPs can offer desktops to all subscribers and businesses by leveraging the desktop and management capabilities of XenApp 6 (included with XenDesktop 4), for both Hosted Shared and Hosted Personal desktop scenarios. Moreover, partners can do so while also keeping infrastructure costs at a minimum.

So what is the difference between a Hosted Shared desktop and Hosted Personal desktop?  Good question.  Both Hosted Shared and Hosted Personal desktops in the CSP world are Windows 7-like desktops, delivered from XenApp 6 servers to end-subscribers using a wide array of end-point devices.  The difference between a Hosted Shared and a Hosted Personal desktop is straightforward.

EMS Cortex 9.1 – Now with XenApp 6 Support
Managing an array of hosted IT services across different tenants can be challenging for service providers. In the previous newsletter, we spotlighted EMS Cortex, a Citrix Ready partner that offers automated provisioning and delegated administration of IT resources. This month, we want to highlight how the Cortex control panel supports delivery of desktops and applications with XenApp.

When used in conjunction with Citrix XenApp, service providers can associate XenApp provisioned desktops and applications along with other hosted IT services to tenants and users from Cortex’s dashboard. This means that after the service provider has configured and published desktop and applications as resources in XenApp, the service provider will be able to associate the XenApp desktops and applications to tenants in the Cortex dashboard.
